The US were actually searching for the three men, then after two hours of the search they located them from the sky as they also waved brightly coloured life jackets to attract attention. The Sailors said their vessel capsized due to large waves and that they spent a night to swim to the shore of the island. The men were at the island for three days before they got rescued.
Lt. William White of the US Navy said "Our combined efforts coupled with the willingness of many different resources to come together and help led to the successful rescue of these men in a very remote part of the Pacific."
