10 Die As Communities Engage in War over Human Head for Chief's Burial in Cross River

Communal Clash in Cros River

It was a norm, that there would be beheading of a youth (male) by a chief hunter for the burial ceremony of a high chief. This happened during the weekend and it led to conflict between two neighboring communities in Obubra Local Government Area in Cross River State.

This crisis left no fewer than 10 people dead.
The conflict between the communities, which were Ogwurude and Oyidah happened when head hunters from Oyidah community harvested the head of a young man which they intended to use for the burial ceremony of a chief.
According to CrossRiverWatch, a resident identified as Clement Ekpe said “Some head hunters chased the Okada boy (Motorcyclist) who was returning from Oyidah Market with a lady and caught up with him at Ogwurude Junction. They asked the lady to run into the bush, killed the boy and cut off his head.
“When the lady got home and narrated what happened, some Ogwurude youths rushed to the junction where they found the headless body of the young man. They followed the bloodstains on the road to Oyidah community”
“They informed Oyidah village head about the incident and asked that those who carried out the act be brought out and handed over to the police.”However the village Head could not produce the perpetrators and that led to a reprisal attack that night from the Ogwurude people” the eyewitness said.
It was alleged that in Oyidah community, as many as seven people died but two persons from Ogwurude community were also killed in the clash while many houses were burnt in the duo communities.

The Cross River State Government reacting to this via the State Security Adviser, Mr. Jude Ngaji said peace had returned to the two communities as security operatives have being deployed to the area, while efforts are being made to hold meetings with leaders of the two communities.
