Some children have being declared missing on Monday as a Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) gas pipeline that cuts across Obotim Nsit Community in Nsit Ibom Local Government area of Akwa Ibom state exploded.

Some allegations have it that the Niger Delta Avengers are behind the explosion.
According to ThisDay; the loss of the children was confirmed by the village Head of the community, Chief Akponidung Akpan Ukpong saying "So many children  are missing and we are still looking for them; we have not traced them and many people were taken to the hospital."
As earlier stated that there were some allegations that the explosion was caused by the Niger Delta Avengers, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Murtala Mani opposed the allegation saying that the explosion was not caused by the Niger delta Avengers.

The State Commissioner of Police said the pipelines were old and were liable to have "technical issues". He said "It is confirmed that there is an explosion in Obotim Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of the State."
He added that "people from the pipeline confirmed that the pipelines are old and overdue for servicing; there is technical problems in the gas pipeline."
"This is no militancy attack; our men are on ground and the fire service has put off the fire."
He also said  "We are waiting for experts to give us their reports, so that we can write our report too on the incident."

But the Transitional Chairman of Nsit Ibom, Mr. Umondak, alleged that militants connected some wires all the way from the gas pipeline to the road, before they exploded the pipeline.
He said "I received a call that my local government is burning, and I was not really sure of what happened and another person called me that they have blown a pipeline at Obotim Ikot Ekong."
The question now is, if the pipeline explosion was caused by militants or it was just a a technical fault.
