Court Sues Coca-Cola for Misleading People on the Health Risks of Their Soft Drinks


Popular Beverage Company, Coca-Cola Co and the American Beverage Association trade has on Wednesday being sued for allegedly misleading its consumers about the health risks of consuming its sugary beverages.

 The case was filed in the Federal Court in Oakland, California, USA.
 They were accused by the nonprofit Praxis Project for downplaying the risks to boost sales, despite the fact that there are scientific evidence linking sugary beverages to diabetes, obesity and also cardiovascular diseases.
 Praxis accused them of using euphemisms such as “balance” and “calories in, calories out” to mislead consumers. Praxis also alleged that Coca-Cola which is one of the world’s famous beverage companies also misled the public to think that it was lack of exercises that was the main cause of obesity.

 Maria Kats, the Litigation Director of the Centre for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) said “We take our consumers and their health very seriously and have been on a journey to become a more credible and helpful partner in helping consumers to manage their sugar consumption.”
