Real Madrid
has announced they will now go ahead with the unveiling of Julen Lopetegui as
their new manager following his dismissal as Spain coach.
Lopetegui
was dismissed just two days before the nation’s World Cup opener against
Portugal after it emerged he was to replace Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu.
The
51-year-old, who flew into Madrid from Krasnodar last night, will be presented
an hour after his stand-in Hierro undertakes a press conference in Russia.
A statement
issued on the club’s official website, www.realmadrid.com, said, “Real Madrid
CF will present Julen Lopetegui as the new first team manager today, Thursday June
14.
“The act
will take place at 7:00 pm CEST at the Santiago Bernabeu presidential box.”
Lopetegui’s
move to Real angered Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales, who
said he was only told about it five minutes before Real confirmed the news
publicly.
Lopetegui
yesterday spoke about his shock departure from the World Cup.
